Hoffman Estates firefighters get new contract

The *Hoffman Estates Daily Herald* recently published an article detailing the resolution of a long-standing contract dispute between the village and its firefighters' union. After months of negotiations, both sides have reached a six-year agreement, replacing the previous three-year deal that had been under arbitration. Village Manager Jim Norris expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “That’s positive for everyone, and we did it without attorneys at the table.” The new contract was finalized just in time to avoid further legal complications and ensure stability for both the department and the community. The original contract, which was awarded through arbitration last summer, covered the period from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2014. However, the Village quickly appealed the decision, primarily due to one key provision: the allowance of 72 hours of unearned time off per year for each firefighter. With 83 members in the department, this was seen as a significant burden on scheduling and budgeting. In the revised agreement, the number of unearned days was reduced to 48, and these must be used or cashed out within the same year they are earned. This change was made to better align with the Village’s financial planning and operational needs. While the majority of the original contract remained unchanged, including a 2.5% raise in 2012, no raise in 2013, and another 2.5% in January 2014, the new terms added additional raises over the next few years. Specifically, there will be a 1% increase in March 2014, followed by 1% increases on January 1 and June 1 in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Union President Dean Slater praised the agreement, emphasizing that the union prioritized cost-saving measures for taxpayers throughout the negotiation process. “We wanted an agreement that served our members while also helping the Village save money,” he said. The full details of the new contract were also posted on the Hoffman Estates village website. According to the official announcement, the agreement is effective from January 1, 2012, and will run through December 31, 2017. It resolves all outstanding grievances and unfair labor practices between the parties. Mayor William D. McLeod commended both sides for their collaboration, saying, “While this agreement took time to reach, I want to thank both negotiating teams for working so hard to reach a mutual agreement by keeping the lines of communication open.” Local 2061 Union President Dean Slater added, “The union membership wanted an agreement that served the membership while saving the Village and the taxpayers’ money. I want to thank the Village President and Board of Trustees for working with us to reach this agreement.” Thanks to Dan and Dennis for their contributions.
