Excerpts from DailyHerald.com: After years of operating out of a space that no longer met their needs, DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) has officially begun the process of moving to a new, state-of-the-art facility. The new communications center will be located at the former DuPage Juvenile Detention Facility on County Farm Road in Winfield. This 33,454-square-foot complex will include both renovated spaces and a new 13,400-square-foot addition. DuPage Public Safety Communications The project, which broke ground earlier this week, is expected to be completed by fall 2018. It’s being funded through a partnership between DU-COMM, the county, and the DuPage Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB). The total cost is $15.87 million, with the ETSB contributing $4 million and DU-COMM using $4.3 million from its reserves. The remaining $7.5 million is being financed by the county, with DU-COMM repaying it over a 25-year lease agreement. County board member Sean Noonan, who also serves as vice chairman of the public works committee, praised the design of the new building. “This facility is built to last,†he said. “It’s designed to withstand 250-mph winds, includes enhanced lightning protection, and meets the standards for storm shelters.†The building already houses offices for the ETSB and the county’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. DU-COMM has been based on the county campus since 1975, but moved to its current location in Glendale Heights in 1995. This move marks a major step forward for public safety in the region, ensuring that emergency services are supported by modern infrastructure and long-term planning.
