Excerpts from DailyHerald.com: After years of operating out of a space that no longer met its needs, DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) has taken a major step forward. The agency is set to move into a brand-new communications center at the former DuPage Juvenile Detention Facility, located at 420 County Farm Road in Winfield. The facility will span 33,454 square feet, combining both renovations and new construction. Groundbreaking took place on Monday, with construction expected to begin within the next few weeks and wrap up by fall 2018. DuPage Public Safety Communications The project, costing $15.87 million, is made possible through an intergovernmental agreement between DU-COMM, the county, and the DuPage Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB). The ETSB is contributing $4 million, while DU-COMM is using $4.3 million from its reserves. The remaining $7.5 million will be financed by the county, which DU-COMM will repay over a 25-year lease agreement. "The portion of the building that will house DU-COMM is going to be built to last," said county board member Sean Noonan, vice chairman of the public works committee. "It will be designed to withstand 250-mph winds, include enhanced lightning protection, and meet storm shelter construction standards." Currently, the building already houses offices for the ETSB and the county’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. DU-COMM first began operations on the county campus in 1975 before relocating to its current site in 1995. This new facility marks a significant upgrade for emergency communication services in the area, ensuring better efficiency and resilience in the face of natural disasters and other emergencies.
