Structural Collapse in Long Grove 4-9-12
The Long Grove Fire District was called on Monday to assess a home in unincorporated Palatine after a vehicle had previously crashed into the side of the structure. Upon arrival, fire officials discovered significant damage to a corner of the brick house and an attached enclosed deck that was beginning to collapse away from the building. The situation required immediate attention to prevent further structural compromise.
A series of images captured by Larry Shapiro showed the extent of the damage. One photo highlighted the deteriorated deck and house, while others depicted firefighters measuring for bracing, installing supports, and working alongside technicians to stabilize the area. Ellis clamps were used to secure the deck against a large tree, and a cutting station was set up in the driveway to prepare materials for reinforcement.
Multiple emergency units responded to the scene, including Long Grove Fire Department, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Palatine Rural Ambulance 36, and squads from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, Libertyville, Lake Zurich, and Buffalo Grove. Technical experts were also on site to design and implement the necessary structural bracing. A roll-off container from Divisions 4 & 5 was dispatched to replenish supplies that had been used during the operation.
Firefighters worked efficiently, completing the stabilization process in under an hour. The team installed vertical braces, supported the sagging deck, and ensured the structure remained intact. The efforts prevented any additional damage to the home, showcasing the quick response and coordination among the various agencies involved.
Larry Shapiro documented the entire operation with several photographs, providing a detailed visual record of the work being done. From the installation of bracing beneath the deck to the final touches, each image captured the dedication and expertise of the responders. The MABAS Divisions 4 & 5 lumber trailer was also brought to the scene, with the roll-off tractor stationed in Round Lake, highlighting the logistical support provided during the incident.
Overall, the collaborative effort between multiple departments and the swift actions of the firefighters helped ensure the safety of the property and its occupants. The successful stabilization of the deck demonstrated the importance of preparedness and teamwork in emergency situations.
