Structural Collapse in Long Grove 4-9-12
The Long Grove Fire District was called on Monday to inspect a home in unincorporated Palatine after a car had previously struck the side of the structure. Upon arrival, fire officials discovered significant damage to a corner of the brick house and an attached enclosed deck that was beginning to collapse away from the building. The situation required immediate attention to prevent further structural deterioration.
A series of images captured by Larry Shapiro showed the extent of the damage. One photo highlighted the collapsed deck and its proximity to the house, while another depicted firefighters measuring for bracing systems. Additional photos revealed the use of Ellis clamps to stabilize the deck against a large tree, as well as a cutting station set up in the driveway. Workers were seen cutting wood under the guidance of technicians designing the structural bracing.
Firefighters worked alongside units from Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Palatine Rural Ambulance 36, and squads from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, Libertyville, Lake Zurich, and Buffalo Grove. The response also included the Divisions 4 & 5 roll-off container with supplemental lumber, which was requested to replenish supplies used during the operation.
Techs installed bracing underneath the deck and added vertical supports to reinforce the structure. The work was completed in less than an hour, successfully preventing further damage to the house. A final image showed the completed bracing system, while others captured the team working in the backyard and the MABAS Divisions 4 & 5 lumber trailer arriving on scene.
Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51 provided key tools and equipment, and the effort was a collaborative one, showcasing the quick response and coordination among multiple agencies. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of swift action in structural emergencies.
