Angular contact ball bearings are commonly used in machine tool spindles. However, the outer ring of these bearings typically features a locking port, which prevents it from fully sealing the annular groove. As a result, many angular contact ball bearings used on machine tool spindles cannot be lubricated with grease in the same way as other bearings found on different types of machinery. Without proper sealing, grease can leak out, and contaminants can enter the bearing, leading to reduced performance and lifespan.
In most cases, an auxiliary lubrication system is required to address this issue. Unfortunately, such systems increase both the cost and the complexity of the machine's design. This has long been a challenge for engineers looking to optimize spindle performance while maintaining reliability.
FAG’s Barden division has introduced an innovative solution to this problem. They have developed a new type of grooved sealing ring that fits precisely into the bearing. Slightly shallower than a standard bearing, this seal aligns perfectly at the intersection point, effectively filling the gap created by the outer ring flange. The result is a more reliable and efficient sealing mechanism.
This advanced sealing method not only prevents grease from leaking out of both sides of the bearing but also protects against the entry of dirt and other contaminants. By improving the sealing performance, FAG’s Barden division has made angular contact ball bearings more versatile and suitable for a wider range of applications, especially in high-precision environments like machine tool spindles. This innovation helps reduce maintenance needs, enhances durability, and simplifies the overall design of the system.
