Dongfeng Nissan Introduces Electric Vehicles to China Market in the Following Year

The person in charge of the Dongfeng Nissan Company recently made it clear in Guangzhou that the introduction of electric vehicles into the Chinese market in 2011 was one year earlier than previously planned. Dongfeng Nissan's move shows that while multinational car companies continue to compete for the traditional car market, they have been accelerating the layout of the future new energy car market.

Multinational car companies accelerate the electric vehicle strategy in China

Dongfeng Nissan General Manager Otani Junmin said that in 2011, electric cars will be imported into China through the CBU import method. According to statistics, this is the first multinational vehicle company to specify the timetable and specific strategies for the introduction of electric vehicles into the Chinese market.

In view of Nissan’s industry position in the global research and development of electric vehicles, the announcement of Dongfeng Nissan has attracted much attention in the industry. As we all know, due to the shortage of global non-renewable energy and the growing awareness of environmental protection, new energy vehicles represented by electric vehicles are increasingly emerging on a global scale. Some experts pointed out that new energy vehicles will become "nuclear weapons" for auto companies competing for the future market.

Otani Junming said that the key to development after the introduction of electric vehicles into the Chinese market is price. "If it's expensive, it's certainly not going to be universal. Consumers feel that environmental protection is important, but it can't be affordable if you pay too much for it. The promotion of electric vehicles requires government support."

He also said that if there is a large demand for electric vehicles, it is impossible to rely solely on imports, and it is certainly necessary to carry out production in China. However, there is currently no plan for the localization of Nissan electric vehicles. “The most important thing is to make electric vehicles. The investment in this area is more important. How to achieve localization in this area is an aspect that we need to overcome in our plan.”

According to media reports, GM also said during the Shanghai Auto Show this year that the GM Volt extended-range electric vehicles are expected to land on the Chinese market in 2011. However, due to the impact of general bankruptcy and reorganization, the implementation of this plan still needs to wait.

China's car prices should be the same starting line early layout

According to a study by McKinsey & Company, an internationally renowned consulting firm, China has fallen behind the world leader in the traditional automotive industry for decades, but it is on the same starting line as Western car companies in new energy vehicles.

Ren Yong, vice president of Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. and deputy general manager of Dongfeng Nissan Co., Ltd., said that the use cost of electric vehicles is actually cheaper than gasoline vehicles, but the original investment is more expensive. Therefore, what kind of business model to obtain government support is the key to promoting the popularity of electric vehicles. The experience of the United States and Japan shows that government support and subsidies are important factors for the large-scale energy vehicles to enter the market. Otani Junmin said that Nissan is negotiating with the government in Japan, the United States, and Europe to obtain preferential policies for electric vehicles. Obviously, the expansion of China's new energy vehicle market is also dependent on the government's strong support at the policy level.

At the same time, it is undeniable that, on the one hand, there is still a gap between domestic electric vehicles and world-class car companies. On the other hand, electric vehicles have the characteristics of high R&D expenses and high costs. At the same time, the prices of products are relatively high, and consumer groups have not yet formed. Therefore, if Chinese auto companies want to win the initiative in the field of electric vehicles and occupy the high ground of the industry, it depends on whether these bottlenecks can achieve breakthroughs.
