Autodesk Powers the Future of Manufacturing and Construction with Forge
At Autodesk University, the company revealed how developers and users across industries are increasingly leveraging the Forge platform to create and deploy applications that drive innovation in manufacturing and construction. A major update to Forge has been released, simplifying app development and making it more accessible for all.
Forge is evolving into a next-generation cloud application framework, transforming the way design and engineering teams work. The industry is shifting from traditional desktop-based CAD tools to cloud-native, collaborative environments. To support this change, the Reality Capture API is now available, and Autodesk plans to introduce several new features soon, including enhanced BIM 360 and Design Automation APIs compatible with Revit and Inventor.
A new Webhooks API will allow developers to connect their apps with third-party services effortlessly. Autodesk is also working on platform solutions built on top of its powerful cloud infrastructure, enabling customers to develop custom workflows and applications. The Forge Application Framework SDK will include modular components like High Frequency Data Management, Solid Modeling, and Web Graphics, helping users tailor the Forge experience and streamline app development and publishing.
In a strategic partnership with Dropbox, Forge is now enabling native .DWG previews directly within the Dropbox platform. With over 1.5 billion .DWG files stored on Dropbox, this integration will significantly enhance collaboration for users who rely on AutoCAD and other Autodesk tools. This partnership aims to make file access, review, and sharing more efficient and seamless for business users.
“Dropbox is one of the largest repositories of Autodesk design files, and our collaboration with Autodesk brings powerful tools to our users,†said Billy Blau from Dropbox. “This partnership is a step toward delivering the innovative features our customers have been asking for.â€
From Autodesk’s perspective, this integration helps eliminate friction when moving data between tasks. “By leveraging Forge web services, we’re providing a smoother experience for our joint customers,†said Amy Bunszel from Autodesk.
Autodesk also announced a new investment through the Forge Fund, backing Assemble Systems, a company that helps construction professionals manage BIM models, drawings, and point clouds. This integration enhances BIM 360’s pre-construction capabilities and supports key workflows like estimating, scheduling, and project management.
Assemble allows users to extract and organize data from multiple models, making it easier to create actionable construction packages. It also tracks changes in design models and updates project data accordingly, improving accuracy and efficiency.
In addition to Assemble, the Forge Fund has invested in startups like SmartVid.io, ManufactOn, and Project Frog, all focused on advancing industrialized construction. This shift is making construction more like manufacturing, reducing risks and boosting profitability.
“We’re seeing construction evolve into a more streamlined, data-driven process,†said Jim Lynch from Autodesk. “Our Forge Fund investments are helping build the tools and workflows needed to meet this transformation.â€
