I arrived at the scene shortly after the fire was upgraded to a second alarm. The roof had already collapsed, and most of the flames were under control. Knollwood’s quint was working in the driveway, and they were supplying water to Countryside’s tower. Fire departments that responded included:

  • Engines: Waukegan, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Beach Park, Newport Township, Lake Villa, and Grayslake
  • Trucks: Knollwood, Countryside, Lake Forest, Wauconda, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods
  • Squads: Deerfield-Bannockburn and Gurnee
  • Ambulances: Lake Forest, North Chicago, Long Grove, Wheeling, and Highland Park
  • Chiefs: Lake Forest, Highland Park, Countryside, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and North Chicago

From the Chicago Tribune:

Lake Forest firefighters worked through the night to contain a major fire that completely destroyed a mansion on Keswick Drive early this morning.

The fire started just after midnight and wasn’t fully under control until around 4:30 a.m., according to Eric Kositzki, a Lake Forest firefighter. He said the house was a total loss.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Montanello stated that while the cause is still under investigation, there is no indication of foul play at this time. Officials estimate the damage to be over $1 million, though it may take several days to determine the exact amount.

The fire spread quickly, with the roof and second floor fully engulfed. It took firefighters more than an hour to bring it under control. The home, valued at approximately $1.9 million, was originally sold for over $2 million in 2008.
