On June 2, 2005, the Bureau of Quality Supervision of Jiangxi Province announced the recent supervision and inspection of the brake fluid product quality of motor vehicles. The spot check results showed that nearly 60% of the product was unqualified. In August 2005, the Guizhou Provincial Product Quality Inspection and Testing Institute announced the results of the sampling of motor vehicle brake fluid products on the Guizhou market—the passing rate was only 40%. At the end of March 2006, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce announced that some of the 10 types of brake fluids were found to be unqualified, but this was the result of several major market clean-ups.
As long as we enter the auto market, it is not difficult to find the quality of brake fluid that is quite worrying. The low-quality brake fluid with a wholesale price of less than RMB 10/l has a large amount of liquidity in the market, and has a wide variety of products. There is no production license and a strict quality assurance certification system. It is only a simple workshop-style production method. The phenomenon is very common. These products account for 50% to 60% of the circulating fluid market, and over 200 manufacturers.
Insiders pointed out that most brake fluids currently sold on the domestic market cannot meet current national standards except for a few well-known brands, and many companies are still producing according to the old standards that have been repealed. "The general substandard products use low-cost methods, and the use of consumer knowledge of brake fluids is not enough to invade the market." Secretary-General of China National Standardization Association Automobile Maintenance Products Technology Promotion Committee, former Ministry of Transport Highway Research Institute brake fluid Professor Guo Yiming, an application technology expert, told reporters. He said that the quality of qualified brake fluid is generally around 25 yuan per bottle, while some of the inferior products sell only 3 yuan per bottle. Driven by the interest, some unscrupulous companies have used the ricinoleic alcohol-based brake fluid and mineral oil-based brake fluid that have already been eliminated to impersonate qualified products.
What's more, some unskilled, unequipped small businesses produce without a license, some products do not even have a registered trademark, or they have a variety of product logos. According to the current national brake fluid standards, there are 13 inspection indicators; while some brake fluids on the market simply divide the brake fluid into several levels according to the balance of the reflux boiling points. Individual companies only use “high brake fluid†and “high-grade car brake fluid†on the product's logo, without marking any indicators to deceive consumers.
Expert analysis pointed out: "Balanced reflux boiling point, the national standard is not less than 205 degrees Celsius. The spot checks of a brand reached only 70 degrees Celsius, the boiling point of water has 90 degrees Celsius, brake oil boiling is actually not as good as water. Because of the poor quality of the brake fluid, it quickly evaporates during the corrosive experiment and even the experiments cannot be carried out.The brake frequency of the car is very high during driving, and the demand for brake fluid is naturally high. The oil is too dangerous."
Professor Guo Yiming also said that consumers' lack of understanding of brake fluid, especially the lack of understanding of the harm caused by the use of inferior brake fluid to the safety of the vehicle, is also one of the reasons why the current brake fluid products are mixed. However, some vehicle maintenance and maintenance units have not fulfilled their responsibilities and have also made the inferior brake fluid available. Therefore, we strengthened supervision, strictly enforced the national standards for brake fluids, increased the promotion of product standards among the industry and consumers, enhanced people’s understanding of the quality of brake fluid products, and exerted both administrative and market forces.
