3-11 Alarm fire and EMS Plan I, 7-5-17

This morning at around 1833 hours, a significant fire broke out at 1833 N. Kimball Avenue in Chicago, as reported by the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) on their official Twitter account. This incident was classified as a 3-11 alarm fire, which typically indicates a large-scale emergency requiring substantial resources and personnel. According to the initial report, the fire presented multiple challenges, especially concerning exposure risks. The CFD deployed an EMS Plan 1 response, which is often implemented in situations where there’s a higher risk of injuries or health concerns for both civilians and first responders. As temperatures were high, the decision was made to bring in extra manpower to ensure crews could be rotated safely due to the extreme heat. While the main body of the fire appeared to be under control, the precautionary EMS plan remained active throughout the operation. As updates came in, it became clear that the situation involved several casualties. There were three total injuries reported so far: one civilian who was critically injured and has been taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital in serious condition. Additionally, two firefighters suffered heat-related illnesses and were also transported to medical facilities—initially to Saint Mary’s but later one firefighter was moved to Illinois Masonic Medical Center for further evaluation. Further developments revealed another firefighter suffering from heat-related complications had been brought to Illinois Masonic as well. Meanwhile, the status of the critically injured civilian changed when they were transferred from Saint Mary’s to Cook County’s Stroger Hospital, indicating a possible shift in their medical needs. Attached are photos from the Chicago Fire Department’s media account showing the scale of the blaze. These images capture the intensity of the firefighting efforts required to manage such a complex incident under challenging environmental conditions. It’s a testament to the dedication of the firefighters who continue to work tirelessly, even at great personal risk, to protect the community during emergencies like this one. Let’s hope all those affected receive the care they need and that the situation continues to improve without further complications.
