Chicago Heights firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant two-story building yesterday. Upon arrival, the first units encountered a 35×40 structure with heavy smoke and significant fire involvement. The blaze, which is currently under investigation and suspected to be of an unknown origin, completely destroyed the building, which housed apartments above a vacant storefront. Multiple fire departments from surrounding areas, including Matteson, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Steger, Crete, and Homewood, joined in the response. The fire was reported around 11:00 AM and occurred on the 200 block of US Route 30.

The fire was intense from the start, with thick smoke pouring from multiple windows and the roof. Firefighters from several departments worked together to bring the flames under control. Elevated master streams from Matteson’s ladder truck and Chicago Heights’ tower ladder were used to attack the fire from above. Inside, crews deployed hand lines through the front door to make entry and begin suppression efforts.
One image shows firefighters ventilating the building as heavy smoke escaped from the 'B' side. Another captures the towering presence of Chicago Heights Truck 673, an HME/Smeal 100' tower ladder, positioned directly in front of the structure. From high above, a firefighter directed a master stream from the bucket of Tower 673, aiming to knock down the flames.
The fire occurred on Christmas Eve, adding to the challenges of the operation. Despite the cold weather, crews worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. No injuries have been reported at this time, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
