Chicago Heights Box Alarm 12-24
Chicago Heights firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant two-story building yesterday. Upon arrival, the first units found a 35 by 40-foot structure with heavy smoke coming from multiple areas. The fire, which is currently under investigation and believed to be of a suspicious nature, completely destroyed the building, which housed apartments above a vacant storefront. Several neighboring fire departments, including Matteson, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Steger, Crete, and Homewood, joined in the response. The incident was reported around 11:00 AM and occurred on the 200 block of US Route 30.
Tim Olk was on the scene and captured several powerful images of the event. His full gallery can be viewed [here](#). For more details, you can also check out a brief article from [CBS Chicago](#).
The fire was intense, with flames and thick smoke visible from all sides. Firefighters from multiple departments worked together to bring the blaze under control. Elevated master streams from Matteson’s ladder truck and Chicago Heights’ tower ladder were used to attack the fire from above. Inside, crews deployed hand lines through the front door, while others focused on ventilation and suppression efforts from the rear. The scene was particularly dramatic on Christmas Eve, adding to the gravity of the situation.
One image shows Chicago Heights Truck 673, an HME/Smeal 100' tower ladder, operating directly in front of the building. Another captures firefighters directing water from the bucket of Tower 673 high above the burning structure. Smoke and flames were clearly visible from both floors in the rear of the building, highlighting the severity of the fire.
This multi-agency response underscores the importance of cooperation between local fire departments in handling large-scale incidents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the destruction of the building remains a significant loss for the community.
