Commercial fire in Wheeling, 11-2-15
Hey everyone,
This just came in from Larry Shapiro regarding a recent fire incident. It happened at a commercial laundry located at 45 W. Hintz around 7 PM. The Wheeling firefighters were initially called out for what was reported as a fire in the building. When the first responding engine arrived, they noted it was a large industrial building. They ordered an evacuation but didn't see any visible signs of fire right away.
However, once employees confirmed there was indeed a fire inside, the firefighters entered and discovered a machine fire roughly 500 feet into the structure. There was also some fire damage reported along the exhaust stack on the roof, which prompted them to upgrade the response level to a Code 4 for an active fire situation. Fortunately, the fire was successfully put out by the teams that responded to the initial alarm.
The Division 1 Mobile Ventilation Unit, which is housed in Wheeling, was brought in to help clear the smoke from the building. Larry shared a few images and even a short video from the scene. You can check out more photos on his website, shapirophotography.net.
Attached below are some of the images he captured. There's one showing the industrial building filled with smoke, another featuring a Wheeling FD Sutphen tower ladder, and a couple more depicting smoke coming from the building’s exhaust. Additionally, there are two pictures of the Tempest Mobile Ventilation Unit being used at the scene to help manage the smoke.
