All Doors/Multiple Doors Fail To Lock/Unlock

If multiple doors are affected, there’s a good chance the problem lies with a faulty fuse or relay. Replacing the fuse is simple, while replacing the relay requires more effort.

To replace the fuse, locate it in the engine bay fuse box. Look for the fuse labeled for the door system and swap it out with a new one. For the relay, it's usually found beneath the dashboard in most Highlanders and is part of an electronic control board. Replacing it involves ordering a new relay and soldering it back into place. This task is best left to someone with experience in electronics repair.

Single Door Doesn’t Lock/Unlock

If only one door is giving you trouble, it’s likely due to a malfunctioning actuator motor. This motor controls the locking mechanism for the entire door. If this is your issue, you may have noticed a buzzing sound recently, which often indicates the motor is failing.

To replace the actuator motor, follow these steps:

  1. First, order an OEM replacement part.
  2. Remove the door panel by locating and unscrewing all the screws holding it in place.
  3. Once the screws are out, gently pull back on the panel. You’ll hear the plastic clips releasing as you go.
  4. With the door panel off, disconnect the electrical wiring connected to the power door locks inside the door.
  5. Behind the panel, you’ll find a weather shield protecting the internal components. Carefully peel it back.
  6. Locate the actuator motor by comparing it to the new one you’ve ordered.
  7. Swap it out, and then reverse the process to reassemble the door.

Remote Key Fob Fails, Door Buttons Work

If your remote key fob fails to lock or unlock the doors, but the buttons on the doors themselves still work, the issue is likely a dead battery. The key fob contains a small battery that can be replaced easily. Squeeze the sides of the fob gently to open it, then replace the battery inside. Be cautious not to force it; if you’re unsure, take it to your local dealership for assistance.
