2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13
An explosion went off in Cary at the Fox Valley Services warehouse on 640 Industrial Drive on Wednesday afternoon. According to reports from the Chicago Tribune, three people were injured following several explosions at the paint manufacturing facility.
Cary police and firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 1:15 p.m. after receiving a call about an explosion. Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens stated that the fire was brought under control by 5 p.m. However, a second explosion occurred shortly after emergency crews arrived, causing significant damage to the two-story brick structure. The initial blast, combined with the subsequent explosion, blew off part of the front facade of the building and created a small hole at the rear. Fortunately, the three workers injured in the incident were not believed to be critically hurt, though their specific conditions remain undisclosed. A hazardous materials response team was eventually called in, as foam units were used to extinguish fires at the paint manufacturing site.
Local resident Jim Hursh described hearing an explosion around 1 p.m. from his business, Whitey’s Crane Rentals, located just a block away. He witnessed heavy smoke pouring out of the building upon arriving and heard another explosion moments later. Emergency vehicles quickly arrived on the scene, and Hursh observed at least one individual with apparent facial burns.
According to Veath, two of the injured employees were transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, while the third was airlifted via helicopter to a specialized burn center. Thankfully, no firefighters sustained injuries during the incident.
In additional coverage, the Cary Fire Department responded to the location at 640 Industrial Drive around 3 p.m., finding heavy smoke upon arrival. Multiple explosions occurred, prompting the request for mutual aid from neighboring departments. About two hours into the operation, command requested a hazardous materials response due to potential chemical spills. More photos from the scene can be found on Facebook.
Local photographer Tyler Tobolt captured several images of the aftermath, showcasing the extensive damage to the warehouse. Meanwhile, Scott Peterson provided further insights, noting the significant structural damage at the front of the building, which spanned nearly half its height. The rear of the building also showed signs of explosion-related damage, with nearby railroad tracks and Route 14 posing additional concerns. Concerned parties had multiple water lines deployed and utilized ladder trucks to manage the situation.
