2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13
An explosion rocked a paint manufacturing warehouse on Wednesday at 640 Industrial Drive in Cary. According to reports from the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred around 1:15 p.m., when several explosions were reported at the Fox Valley Services facility. Cary police and firefighters were among the first responders, arriving on the scene shortly after receiving the call.
Chief Steven Casstevens of the Cary Police Department stated that upon arrival, emergency crews encountered a significant fire situation. He mentioned that a second explosion happened while they were still on-site, causing substantial damage. The initial blast combined with the subsequent explosion resulted in the front portion of the brick building being blown off. Additionally, a smaller hole was created at the rear of the structure. Three workers were injured and transported to nearby hospitals. Fortunately, their injuries were not considered life-threatening, though their current conditions remain undisclosed.
HazMat teams were dispatched to the site due to concerns over potential chemical spills. A specialized foam unit was deployed to control the fire at the paint manufacturing facility. Local resident Jim Hursh recounted hearing the first explosion and witnessing heavy smoke emanating from the building. He then heard another explosion moments later, observing emergency vehicles quickly arriving on the scene. One individual appeared visibly injured, with apparent facial burns.
Further details emerged from Tyler Tobolt's account, who noted that the Cary Fire Department responded around 3 p.m. and found heavy smoke upon arrival. Multiple explosions occurred during the course of the incident. Incident command requested mutual aid from MABAS Box #5-281 approximately two hours into the operation. A HazMat team was later called in due to the possibility of a chemical spill. Several photos from the scene are available on Facebook.
Scott Peterson provided additional insights, sharing images taken roughly 15 minutes after the initial response. He described the front wall of the building as having been significantly damaged, with much of its height blown outward along its entire length. Damage was also observed at the rear of the structure, near railway tracks and a highway. Concerns arose regarding flammable tanks located in front of the facility, prompting firefighters to position multiple water lines and utilize their ladder truck. Peterson left the scene before things escalated further, noting that aerial footage from local news channels captured the intensity of the event.
