Building fire in Chicago 4-21-13
This report comes to us from Erik Haak, who provided some detailed updates early this Sunday morning. At approximately 9:20 AM, Engine 62 responded to a confirmed fire at 11259 South Michigan Avenue. Battalion 22 arrived shortly after and quickly determined that the fire had originated in the basement. The flames rapidly spread upward, engulfing both the second floor and eventually reaching the cockloft of this two-story apartment building, which sat above a commercial structure.
Truck 62 was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), standing by as a precaution in case of emergencies. All the accompanying images were captured by Erik Haak himself, providing an intimate look at the unfolding situation.
As I continue to monitor the scene, here’s what’s been happening so far. Engine 62 has already deployed its lines, showing their immediate response to contain the blaze. Meanwhile, Engine 75 secured a hydrant nearby, ensuring that water supply wouldn’t be an issue. In the background, CFD’s crimson aerial ladder truck, Truck 62, could be seen parked further down the block, ready to assist as needed.
The firefighters have also taken proactive measures to control the situation. As part of their strategy, they’ve begun ventilating the roof to release trapped heat and smoke, preventing further damage and creating safer conditions for those inside. This critical step is essential in managing fires that have penetrated the upper levels of a structure.
