Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 5-2-11
Chicago Engine 99 was called to what was initially believed to be a rubbish fire in the rear of 3401 S. Lawndale Avenue, a location known for having guard dogs. Upon arrival, Engine 99 quickly realized the situation was more serious than expected, as flames were already inside the building. They immediately requested a full working fire response, and shortly after, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm. Thick black smoke poured from the structure, visible from several blocks away, drawing attention from nearby residents and emergency responders.
Deputy District 4 (2-2-4) arrived on scene and reported fire through the roof, prompting an escalation to a 2-11 alarm. The building in question was an industrial brick structure with a steel deck roof, making it particularly challenging to manage. Firefighters deployed elevated master streams from Snorkel 1, Tower 5, and Tower 54, alongside multiple 2.5-inch hand lines to contain the blaze.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., who was in the area, spotted the smoke from a distance and arrived just as crews were cutting through the overhead doors to gain entry. He captured a series of powerful images showing the progression of the fire and the firefighters' efforts to suppress it. His photos provide a vivid look at the intensity of the situation.
