Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 5-2-11
Last night, Chicago Engine 99 was called to what was initially believed to be a trash fire in the rear of 3401 S. Lawndale Avenue, a location known for having guard dogs. Upon arrival, Engine 99 quickly realized the situation was more serious than expected and reported that the fire was inside the building, prompting an immediate request for a full working fire response. Shortly after, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm, as thick black smoke poured from the structure and could be seen from several blocks away.
Deputy District 4 (2-2-4) arrived on scene and reported fire visible through the roof, which led to the alarm being escalated to a 2-11. The fire was located in an industrial brick building with a steel deck roof, making it a challenging structure to manage. Firefighters deployed elevated master streams from Snorkel 1, Tower 5, and Tower 54, along with multiple 2½-inch hand lines to contain the blaze.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., who was nearby, spotted the smoke from a distance and made his way to the scene as emergency crews were cutting through the overhead doors to gain access. He captured a series of images documenting the fire's progression and the firefighters' efforts to control the flames.

Gordon has a complete gallery of photos available [here](#), offering a detailed visual account of the incident. This was a complex and intense fire, requiring multiple units and advanced tactics to bring under control. The quick response and coordinated efforts of the firefighters helped prevent further spread and potential damage to surrounding areas.
