New fire station for Palatine

The *Daily Herald* reported on July 14 that construction crews are set to begin work next month on a new fire station in Palatine. This development marks another step forward in the village’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety infrastructure. A recent artist rendering of the upcoming Palatine Fire Department Station 81 was shared, showing the design of the new facility located at 1215 N. Quentin Road, near the corner of Echo Lane. The image gives residents a first look at what the future building will resemble. As the community adjusts to the ongoing construction of the new police headquarters, locals can now expect to see more activity at a second public safety site. Crews are expected to break ground within the next 30 to 45 days, signaling the start of the project. The village council recently approved a contract with a guaranteed maximum price of $2.56 million for the construction of the satellite fire station. This figure includes subcontractor bids, contingency funds, and other associated costs. When factoring in planning, design, furnishings, and administrative expenses, the total project cost is estimated at $2.98 million — just under the $3 million budget. While the village is hopeful about potential state funding, it's not relying on it. A $575,000 commitment from the state through its capital plan could reduce the financial burden, but officials are preparing to secure alternative funding sources. Village Manager Reid Ottesen noted that while the chance of receiving the state funds is roughly 50-50, the village is "planning for the worst." To finance both the new fire station and the larger $23 million police headquarters, Palatine plans to issue two bond measures. The first will be launched next month, as the buildings won’t be completed until next year. This phased approach helps avoid unnecessary interest costs by not borrowing the full amount upfront. Earlier this year, the design of the 8,700-square-foot station was adjusted to stay within budget. While most changes were cosmetic, the number of firefighters allowed at the station was reduced from six to five. However, these savings could be offset if the village doesn’t waive the requirement for an automatic sprinkler system in the noncombustible attic space. Once completed, the new station is expected to open in March or April. The current Dundee Road station will be closed, and the space will be taken over by the Masonic Lodge. Fire officials have emphasized that the new location is essential for improving emergency response times in west and northwest Palatine, where the existing station is farther away. This move reflects the growing need for better coverage as the area continues to develop.
