New fire station for Palatine

The *Daily Herald* reported on July 14 that construction crews are set to break ground next month for a new fire station in Palatine. This development marks another major step forward for the village’s public safety infrastructure, following the ongoing construction of the new police headquarters. A recent artist's rendering of the upcoming Palatine Fire Department Station 81 has been released, showing the design of the new facility located at 1215 N. Quentin Road, near the corner of Echo Lane. The image gives residents a first look at what the building will resemble once completed. Village officials have already approved a contract with a guaranteed maximum price of $2.56 million for the construction, which includes subcontractor bids, contingency funds, and other associated costs. When all expenses—such as planning, design, furnishings, and administrative fees—are added up, the total is expected to come in just under $3 million. While the village is hopeful for potential state funding, they’re not relying on it. A $575,000 commitment from the state’s capital plan could reduce the financial burden, but Village Manager Reid Ottesen said they're preparing for the possibility that it may not materialize. To finance both the new fire station and the larger $23 million police headquarters, Palatine plans to issue two separate bonds. This phased approach allows the village to avoid unnecessary interest costs by borrowing only what’s needed now, rather than upfront for both projects. Earlier this year, the design of the 8,700-square-foot station was slightly modified to stay within budget. These changes were mostly aesthetic, though the number of firefighters the station can accommodate was reduced from six to five. However, if the village decides not to waive its requirement for automatic sprinklers in the noncombustible attic space, some of the cost savings could be offset. Once completed, the new station is expected to open by March or April 2025. The existing Dundee Road station will be closed, and the space will be taken over by the Masonic Lodge. Officials say the new location is essential for improving emergency response times in the western and northwestern parts of Palatine, where current coverage is limited. With construction on the horizon, residents can expect to see more activity around the site in the coming weeks. As the project moves forward, the community will be watching closely to see how the new fire station enhances public safety in the area.
