This is from Art Zern: The fire was dispatched at 2156 hours for a structure. When the first responding units arrived, the building was fully involved. E-2 encountered heavy fire on three sides and noticed the "B" side exposure starting to catch. They immediately called for a defensive operation and began using their deck gun along with a 2 1/2-inch hand line on the B-side exposure. E-1 arrived shortly after and pulled a skid line to the D-side. A quick initial knockdown was achieved thanks to the DeKalb T-1 unit, which was deployed due to structural concerns. The gas-fed fire on the B-side continued until Nicor arrived to dig and shut off the gas supply. The incident escalated to a general alarm with help from Cortland and GK engines, Hampshire Truck, and COQ companies. A few individuals were evaluated for smoke inhalation, but no firefighters were injured. Art From the Sycamore FD Facebook page: Last night into early this morning, the Sycamore Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at the 1300 block of Janet Street. Upon arrival, first responders found heavy fire engulfing most of the building and initiated a defensive attack using a master stream device with tank water. The majority of the fire was under control within about an hour. However, a natural gas-fed fire at the meter remained active until a NICOR crew arrived and successfully shut off the fuel supply. Firefighters stayed on scene for an additional two hours to complete overhaul operations. A great job by the first-arriving units in managing such a severe fire, along with support from our mutual aid partners. No injuries were reported among firefighters or residents. Two people were evaluated by paramedics on-site but declined treatment. Initial damage estimates at the fire location, 1319 Janet Street, are around $300,000 for the structure and its contents. Heat from the fire also damaged a neighboring home at 1311 Janet Street, with estimated damages of approximately $50,000. The fire was escalated to a general alarm, with assistance coming from several nearby departments including DeKalb, Elburn, Genoa, Hampshire, Burlington, Cortland, Pingree Grove, and others. Sycamore Police and Public Works also assisted, along with Nicor and ComEd. The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is under investigation.
