Bearing Housings

Bearing housings are essential components in many mechanical systems. Choosing the right one can significantly impact performance, durability, and maintenance. There are several types of bearing housings available, each suited for different applications. Below are five common options to consider.

  • Pillow Block: Also known as pedestal housings, pillow blocks are the most widely used type. They provide strong support for shafts where the mounting is parallel to the axis. These housings come in various configurations with adjustable bolt holes. Pressed steel pillow block bearings are ideal for lighter-duty tasks.
  • Flanges: Flange housings are the second most common type, often round or square, and fastened with two, three, or four bolts. They’re commonly used in tensioning systems for conveyor belts or elevators. Rod-end units, which feature an eye-shaped head and a shank, are also part of this category. These can be either shoe or "T" types. Flanges may also come in hanger mountings, such as single, double, or triple boss styles.
  • Special Housings: Some manufacturers create custom housing solutions for unique applications. For example, water-cooled housings are specifically designed for use in steel mills with continuous casters. If you have a specific project, you can request custom housing designs from manufacturers.
  • Tapered Roller Bearing Housings: These are commonly used in material-handling equipment, air-handling systems, and industrial ovens. Selecting the right housing depends on the load and mounting conditions. For instance, if the load is at an angle, the housing must be able to withstand the force without slipping.
  • Cylindrical Roller Bearing Housings: Most cylindrical roller bearings are designed with a single row and a cage. They are suitable for heavy radial loads, high-speed applications, and rapid acceleration. Single-piece housings are recommended for cranes, motors, and conveyors, while split housings are better for heavy rail vehicles and transmission systems.
  • Split Plummer Block Housing: This type is typically used for self-aligning ball bearings, spherical roller bearings, and CARB toroidal roller bearings. Manufacturers produce them in various designs, eliminating the need for special orders. They are usually made of gray cast iron but can also be made from spheroidal graphite iron for added strength. Common applications include mining, metallurgy, and paper processing.

Bearing housings are available in a variety of materials, including ductile iron, cast iron, pressed steel for lighter applications, and aluminum. Aluminum requires a tighter fit due to its thermal expansion properties.
