Toyota is currently testing a new, innovative breathalyzer system that doesn't require a mouthpiece, aiming to prevent intoxicated drivers from getting behind the wheel. This technology is similar to Volvo's approach, where drivers simply blow into a handheld device that analyzes their breath without needing to place it in their mouths. The system uses advanced sensors to detect alcohol levels accurately and efficiently.
To ensure reliability, a mounted digital camera captures the driver's face along with each breath test result. This feature prevents someone else from taking a test on behalf of an impaired driver, as the system can match the facial recognition with the corresponding alcohol reading. This added layer of security makes it much harder for individuals to bypass the system using another person’s breath.
If the alcohol level exceeds a certain threshold—though Toyota hasn’t yet specified what that limit is—the vehicle’s ignition will be disabled. The car won’t start until the driver provides a lower alcohol reading, ensuring that only sober drivers can operate the vehicle.
