Four measures to promote crop production and increase income
I. Pay attention to the comparative studies conducted by the crop plantation line with foreign countries that have different wheat cultivation methods. The results show that the yield of crops planted in an east-west direction can increase by more than 10 kilograms per mu. According to analysis, the east-west orientation not only improves the efficiency of light energy utilization but also helps the root system extend more effectively under the influence of Earth's magnetic field, thereby enhancing nutrient absorption from the soil. Further research suggests that when arranging crop planting directions, the impact of monsoon wind direction should also be considered. In dry soils or during periods with limited rainfall, it is recommended to plant against the wind—meaning the planting direction is perpendicular to the wind direction. This helps maintain soil moisture and reduces the negative effects of drought on crops. On the other hand, in areas with abundant water or during hot and rainy seasons, it is better to align the planting direction with the wind, which helps regulate soil temperature and humidity, creating a more favorable microclimate for crop growth and development.
Second, regulating the sowing or planting density of crops while maintaining a certain level of density allows for wider spacing between rows, maximizing the "edge advantage" of crop growth. For certain crops like tea or fruit trees, pruning techniques can be applied to improve air circulation and light penetration among plants. These practices enhance the effective use of sunlight, leading to increased productivity and profitability.
Third, mechanical stimulation such as topping, pinching back, or applying pressure to specific crops like vegetables, potatoes, and millet can suppress their reproductive centers and encourage the growth of lateral branches. This leads to a higher proportion of female flowers, ultimately increasing yields. For example, timely removal of male flowers in corn reduces nutrient consumption and enhances grain filling. In sweet potatoes, “tangling†(not rolling) the vines can inhibit the growth of new roots and focus nutrients on tuber development. Similarly, proper division of plants can promote the growth of adventitious roots, expanding the area for nutrient absorption and resulting in larger fruits and berries. Experienced farmers often use bamboo sticks to poke the base of pumpkin stems, stimulating the formation of more female flowers and increasing fruit production.
Fourth, the scientific intercropping of different crops is an effective strategy for maximizing land use and boosting yield and income. However, to ensure balanced growth between primary and secondary crops and achieve stable, high yields, it’s essential to consider the growth duration, root depth, plant height, leaf width, and adaptability of each crop. A well-planned arrangement and rotation between different crops form an important farming system that requires long-term planning. Common practices include crop rotation such as rice and peanuts, or rotating different crops under similar soil conditions, like corn and vegetables. Even within the same crop type, rotating between fruit vegetables and leafy vegetables can help maintain soil health. Although the forms of rotation may vary, they all need to be scientifically planned based on each crop's nutritional needs, its impact on soil fertility, root depth, and pest resistance. This approach promotes mutual complementation, coordinated growth, efficient land use, reduced pests and diseases, and ultimately higher yields and profits.
