Four measures to promote crop production and increase income
I. Pay attention to the close contrast tests conducted by the crop plantation line in foreign countries, where different wheat cultivation methods were tested. The results showed that the yield of crops planted in an east-west direction can increase by more than 10 kilograms per mu. According to the analysis, the east-west orientation not only improves the light energy utilization rate of crops but also helps the root system extend into the rows under the influence of the Earth's magnetic field, thereby enhancing the absorption and use of soil nutrients. Further research suggests that when determining the planting direction of crops, the impact of monsoon wind direction should also be considered. In drought-prone soils or during seasons with limited rainfall, it is recommended to plant against the wind—i.e., in a vertical direction relative to the wind. This helps maintain soil moisture and reduces the negative effects of drought on crops. In areas with abundant water or during hot and rainy seasons, planting in the same direction as the wind is preferable, which aids in regulating soil temperature and humidity, improving the microclimate in the field, and promoting healthy crop growth and development.
Second, managing the sowing or planting density of crops while ensuring a certain level of spacing allows for maximizing the "edge advantage" of plant growth. For certain crops like tea or fruit trees, pruning and trimming can improve air circulation and light penetration among plants, leading to better light energy utilization and higher yields. These practices help enhance productivity and profitability.
Third, mechanical stimulation such as topping, pinching, or rubbing certain crops (like vegetables, potatoes, and millet) can suppress their reproductive centers and promote branching growth. This increases the proportion of female flowers, ultimately boosting production. For example, timely removal of male flowers in corn reduces nutrient consumption and improves grain filling. In sweet potatoes, "tangling" (not tumbling) can inhibit the growth of adventitious roots, directing nutrients toward the tuber. Meanwhile, proper division encourages root growth, expanding the area for nutrient absorption and increasing fruit size. Experienced farmers often use bamboo sticks to pierce the base of pumpkin stems, stimulating the production of more female flowers and more fruits.
Fourth, scientific intercropping and crop rotation are effective strategies for maximizing land use and increasing yields. To ensure balanced growth between main and secondary crops and achieve stable, high yields, it's important to consider factors such as the growth duration of different crops, root depth, plant height, leaf width, and adaptability. A well-organized arrangement and mutual rotation between crops form a crucial farming system, typically based on long-term planning. Common practices include crop rotation, such as rice and peanut rotation, or rotating different crops under similar soil conditions, like corn and vegetable crops. Even within the same crop type, rotating between fruit vegetables and leafy vegetables can optimize resource use, reduce pests and diseases, and ultimately boost productivity and income through complementary growth and coordinated development.
