Japanese chemical companies develop environmentally friendly flame retardants

The Japan Science and Technology Agency recently issued a press release saying that a chemical company in Osaka Prefecture has been commissioned by the agency to develop a new technology that will help mass-produce environmentally friendly phosphorus flame retardants in the future.

According to the communique, plastics are indispensable materials for daily life and industrial production, but most types of plastics are flammable. In order to make plastics difficult to burn, the flame retardants currently used are mostly halogen flame retardants. The agent contains harmful halogen elements, which tend to pollute the environment after the product is discarded.

Environmental friendly phosphorous flame retardants have attracted attention as substitutes for halogenated flame retardants for many years. However, these flame retardants are mostly liquid, and the added durability and water resistance of plastics are reduced.

The researchers abandoned the previous method of physical mixing, and instead introduced phosphorus directly into the backbone of the polymer resin, achieving a stable flame retardant performance. The mechanical properties and water resistance of the plastic added with this flame retardant have not decreased, and the flame resistance has greatly improved.

The communique said that in this study, the researchers used cationic nickel metal hydride catalysts that were developed using cheap nickel chloride as a raw material. They can be used to efficiently catalyze the synthesis of flame retardants. This will help future mass production. Environmentally friendly phosphorus flame retardant.
