The most significant difference between State III engines and State II engines lies in the switch from mechanical pumps to electronic fuel injection systems. This advancement allows for a more precise match between fuel supply and air intake, leading to more complete combustion of the fuel. As a result, energy efficiency improves while emissions decrease. In other words, the performance and compatibility of the EFI system directly determine the overall effectiveness of the State III engine.
For example, the Iveco light passenger vehicles equipped with the Sophi III engine demonstrate this advantage. The engine is imported as a whole from Italy and uses the advanced German Bosch high-pressure common-rail system, which ensures excellent matching. This leads to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the Sofim II engines. Industry data shows that diesel vehicles are about 20% more fuel-efficient than gasoline vehicles of similar quality. Compared to some diesel models, the Iveco III engines are approximately 10% more efficient. This means that using an Iveco III product can save nearly 30% in fuel costs over time.

Currently, there are three main technologies used to meet the National III emission standards in commercial vehicle engines: electronically controlled high-pressure common rail systems, electronically controlled single-pump systems, and electronically controlled EGR systems. Among these, high-pressure common rail fuel injection technology is widely regarded as one of the most mature solutions for National III engines.
Many well-known commercial vehicle manufacturers now use high-pressure common rail systems for their National III engines. Since this technology is well-established in Europe, domestic European joint-venture companies have adopted it earlier. For instance, Nanjing Iveco introduced its National III products to the Chinese market as early as 2004. After years of testing and real-world usage, both the oil adaptability and the stability of these engines have been widely recognized by the market. Additionally, its unique filtration self-detection alarm system helps prevent damage caused by low-quality fuel.
It is reported that since Beijing implemented the National III emission standards in 2005, sales of Iveco Lightbus in the city have consistently increased by an average of 30% annually.
Service is the last word.
Some commercial vehicle companies lack the core technology needed for National III engines and must upgrade their existing engines to meet the new standards. Lin Wei, Secretary-General of the China Light Vehicle United Analysis Association, pointed out that after the full implementation of National III standards, after-sales service becomes a crucial test. This includes whether spare parts are available on time, whether professional diagnostic tools are in place, and whether maintenance staff are trained to handle National III engines. “The National III engine uses EFI technology, which requires higher-level diagnostic equipment and skilled personnel. Many companies had limited time to prepare, making it difficult to ensure proper diagnosis and maintenance.â€
According to reports, since the launch of National III products in 2004, Nanjing Iveco has equipped its national service network with professional engine diagnostic computers. “Because our Iveco III products were available early and we have a large inventory, our after-sales service has accumulated extensive experience, ensuring that our customers receive timely and professional support,†said Shuai Guowang, Vice Minister of After-sales Service at Nanjing Iveco.
