Sinopec already has mature PTA technology

Recently, the energy-saving retrofit design package for the Yangtze Petrochemical PTA process was reviewed by the Sinopec expert group. The team highlighted that this project, which incorporates 48 national patents and 26 authorized projects, has achieved a number of breakthroughs that fill gaps in domestic PTA technology. These advancements are now ready for industrial application, marking a significant step forward in China's petrochemical sector. The adoption of this technology is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve the efficiency of the aging PTA equipment at Yangzi Petrochemical. It also enhances the technical value of the facilities and demonstrates that Sinopec now possesses mature, independently developed PTA technology with intellectual property rights. For many years, the Chinese petrochemical industry relied heavily on foreign technology. In the case of PTA units, nearly 20 plants were built from the late 1970s onward, mostly using imported technologies. To break free from technological dependence, Sinopec launched the "Ten Dragon" project in the early 2000s, aiming to develop localized PTA technology. Yangzi Petrochemical took the lead in this initiative. The original PTA plant at Yangzi, which was introduced in 1978 using U.S. patent technology, became the largest of its kind in China when it started operations in 1989. Over the years, the company continuously upgraded the facility. In 1995, after achieving full compliance, the plant underwent its first major expansion, increasing capacity from 450,000 to 600,000 tons per year. This effort led to the development of 16 patents and several proprietary technologies, earning the project the top Sinopec Science and Technology Progress Award. Following further upgrades and joint innovation, the plant's annual output eventually exceeded 700,000 tons, making it the largest PTA facility in China. In 2000, when the task of developing localized PTA technology was assigned, Yangzi Petrochemical collaborated with Sinopec Engineering Construction Company, Shanghai Pharmaceutical Industry Design Institute, East China University of Science and Technology, and Nanjing University of Technology. Together, they formed a leading research team focused on localizing the entire PTA technology system. Through extensive analysis of foreign patents and domestic imported equipment, they identified key areas for development. By 2003, the foundational research, engineering studies, and supporting work were completed and passed Sinopec’s expert review. Since then, Yangzi Petrochemical has remained closely attuned to global PTA technology trends, continuously refining and optimizing the project in collaboration with various partners, ensuring the technology becomes increasingly advanced and comprehensive. In 2004, the State Council approved the construction of a new 450,000-ton PTA line at the existing site. During negotiations with foreign companies, it was found that foreign firms had already made concessions in offering their large-scale PTA technology, reducing the cost of introducing new lines by 30%. As the plant expanded, issues such as equipment-process mismatches, high material consumption, and excessive energy use became bottlenecks. Introducing foreign technology to upgrade the existing facilities would not only involve high patent fees but also risk repeating the cycle of “introduction - backwardness - re-introduction - backwardness.” To address this, Sinopec sent an expert team to Yangzi Petrochemical to collaborate on a transformation plan, aiming to achieve sustainable and efficient development.
