Atlas Copco is the first to pass compressed air certification

Antwerp: Atlas Copco Oil Free Air has made a groundbreaking announcement—its Z-Series oil-free screw air compressors have achieved the world’s first TÜV-certified ISO 8573-1 CLASS0 standard. This milestone ensures that industries such as food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics, automotive painting, powder coating, and textile production can now rely on compressed air free from any risk of oil contamination. The certification process was rigorous, simulating real-world industrial conditions and confirming that no oil traces were detected under various testing scenarios. As a result, the compressed air meets the highest possible standard for oil content—CLASS0. Atlas Copco continues to lead the industry in setting new benchmarks for air purity, reinforcing its position as a global leader in compressor technology. “We are proud to offer our customers a solution that eliminates the risk of oil-induced contamination,” said Luc Hendrickx, President of Atlas Copco Oil Free Air. “These results not only confirm that our oil-free screw compressors are an efficient choice for managing operational costs but also the most reliable option for minimizing risks.” Oil-free compressed air is more than just a technical advantage—it plays a critical role in risk management. Even minimal oil presence can lead to product damage, high defect rates, costly production halts, and expensive cleaning processes. Industries where product contamination is a serious concern face significant challenges, including recalls, legal actions, and reputational damage. Sectors like food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and automotive coatings are especially vulnerable. To address these concerns, Atlas Copco’s Oil-Free Air Division has long prioritized quality assurance. Since 2005, the division has followed the ISO 8573-1 certification process for its compressors. In this case, Atlas Copco partnered with TÜV, an independent German technical supervision organization, to conduct the most stringent tests available. Additional pressure and temperature constraints were applied during testing, yet no oil traces were found, even under the harshest conditions. The ISO 8573-1 standard, first introduced in 1991 and updated in 2001, has evolved to better meet the needs of industries requiring ultra-pure air. The revised version includes more comprehensive measurement methods, covering all forms of oil contamination—liquids, vapors, and aerosols. This update provides a more accurate reflection of air quality. Based on the original five classes, the new ISO 8573-1 CLASS0 represents the strictest level of purity ever established.
